Selecting a Filter for your UV Water Filtration System

The golden rule for UV filtration is you must hit 5 microns or less.

Generally, most folks use 1 or 2 pre-filters for their UV system. The reason for a 2nd filter is that you have versatility compared to a single pre-filter. For example, 2 filters would allow you to run a sediment filter and a carbon filter in series or two sediment filters, the first collecting the larger particles and the second the smaller particles, thus extending the life of the finer filter.

Ultimately what filter setup is right for you depends on what you are trying to filter out of the water. Sediment filters are great for eliminating sand, dirt, and grit and are needed to get the particle size small enough (5 microns or less) so that the bacteria cannot hide behind the particles to avoid the UV light. A carbon filter is more of a polishing filter that serves the purpose of improving the taste and smell of the water. Additionally, carbon filters undergo the physical process of adsorption which is where certain pollutants are attached to the surface of the carbon particles removing them from the water supply. Which is why it improves the taste and odor of the water.
So the two most common filter combinations that we see are 20-micron sediment and a 5-micron sediment or a 25-micron carbon and a 5-micron sediment or a 20-micron sediment and a 5-micron carbon depending on water conditions.

If you would like to learn more about the different types of sediment and carbon filters available check out our filtration basics video in the description below.

So I hope this video helped you to learn a little something about selecting proper filters for your UV system.
