Our new diatomaceous earth water filter system is a mobile filtration unit for emergency disaster deployment. This unit is capable of filtering 50 gallons per minute or 72,000 gallons per day of clear, safe water.

Let me take you through the process of how our system works. First, you see our self-contained mobile filtration trailer setting up near a river. In this instance, a fire truck is dispatched to pump water from the river to the filtration trailer. After a few minutes of laying hose lines from the river to the trailer, we begin the process of supplying water to the various filters in the trailer.

In the first stage, we have a prefilter to take out the larger particles by trapping them in a large filter bag. In the second step of this process, the water goes through the diatomaceous earth filter and removes tiny organisms such as cryptosporidium, e coli and giardia.

These are the pathogens in water that make people sick and in some cases can lead to death. This filter is a vacuum system where as the water is drawn through the elements in a pressure system where it is pushed through. The turbidimeters continually monitor the water quality each step of the way. Turbidity is a cloudiness or haziness of the water caused by suspended solids, generally invisible to the naked eye. Nephelometric turbidity units known as NTU’s, are used for measuring turbidity in the water.

At no time filter water should receive 1 NTU. Here we see raw water coming from the fire truck at 9.4 NTU’s before any filtration. After the prefilter and before the D.E. filer, we have a reading of 2.4 NTU’s.

Steps:
1. Turn off the main plumbing supply to the house and drain as much water as possible from the pipes by opening all faucets and fixtures and then opening a drawoff valve near the main.
2. Determine the location of the prefilter. If necessary, attach a piece of plywood for attaching the filter bracket.
3. Use a tubing cutter to cut in to the main water supply pipe.
4. Clean, apply flux, and solder the adapter fittings to transition into the filter housing on a workbench to keep the heat away from the filter. Once cool, connect the adapter fittings to the filter housing, using thread sealing tape on threaded connections.
5. Clean, flux, and then dryfit the remaining connections. Include “T” fittings that allow water into and out of the filter, but also connect to a shutoff valve that serves as a bypass. Include a shutoff valve for water entering the filter and a shutoff valve for water leaving the filter.
6. In normal operation, the bypass valve remains in the closed position and the two filter valves are in the open position. If the filter requires service, those valves should be reversed, allowing untreated water into the building temporarily.

How to Change your PUR Water Faucet Filtration System

Water Filtration Demonstration


Water Filtration for Kids

Items Needed:
• Top ½ of a 2-L bottle (or automotive funnel).
• Coffee Filters (or shop towels)
• Cotton Balls
• Sand
• Pea Gravel
• ¾” Gravel
• About 12-12oz plastic cups (clear)
• 4 or 5 5-gallon buckets (to hold dirty water, filtered water, and materials)
• Dirt (this will need to be mixed with water and kept in a 5-gallon bucket)

Instructions:
1. Mix dirt with about 3-4 gallons of water to make a testing solution.
2. Place coffee filter into 2-L bottle.
3. Place a handful of cotton balls into the 2-L bottle on top of the coffee filter.
4. Place a layer of sand on the cotton balls approximately 1” thick.
5. On the sand, place a 1” thick layer of pea gravel.
6. On the pea gravel, place a 1” to 1-1/2” thick layer of ¾” gravel.
7. Once the filter has been made, use a plastic cup to pull some of the dirty water mix from a 5-gallon bucket.
8. Over another clear plastic cup, pour the dirty water mix into the filter and let the water filter through.
9. The 1st pass will show that the water is slightly cleaner than the original mix.
10. Once all the water has been poured out of the 1st cup and collected in the 2nd cup, filter it again…
11. Put the 2-L bottler over the 1st cup (emptied) and pour the mix from the 2nd cup through the filter.
12. The 2nd pass should become clearer than the 1st pass.
13. Continue this process a few times and each time, the water will become clearer.
